Bike handlebar – For steering your bike

The bike handlebar is part of the components of a road bike (such as the stem, the seatpost or the saddle for example). Together with the stem, it forms the cockpit and its main role is to allow the cyclist to steer the bike. When the cyclist turns the handlebar to the right or left, the input is transmitted to the fork and front wheel via the stem (fixed to the centre of the handlebar and the top of the fork steerer). The fork then turns thanks to the headset (bearings) located between the fork steerer and the head tube of the frame.

Bike handlebar – For adjusting your position

The bicycle handlebar is used to steer the bike, but that is not its only role. The handlebar of a road bike has a specific shape that allows the rider to adopt an aerodynamic position, to pull on the arms during a sprint and to regularly change hand position. It also serves as a support for the brake levers. The shape of road bike handlebars varies slightly depending on the model. Brands generally offer 3 handlebar standards: classic, compact or anatomic shape to suit the preferences of every cyclist. Manufacturers also produce handlebars in different widths (38 to 46 cm) to suit different body types and shoulder widths.
