How to fit a BSC-type MTB bottom bracket?
Here is a guide to help you fit a BSC threaded external bearing bottom bracket, one of the most common standards on MTBs.
- Time: 30 min
- Level: Intermediate
- Tools: External bottom bracket tool | Wire brush | Grease
Steps
- Run a brush through the bottom bracket shell of your frame to remove any potential swarf or burrs from machining.
- Grease the threads of the MTB frame and those of the bottom bracket.
- Hand-thread the right-hand side of the bottom bracket anticlockwise. Finish tightening with the bottom bracket tool.
Probikeshop tip: as the thread is very fine, only use the bottom bracket tool once you are certain the bottom bracket is properly engaged.
- Then hand-thread the left-hand side of the bottom bracket clockwise, followed by the bottom bracket tool for the final tightening.
All that remains is to fit your crankset.
