How to fit a mountain bike fork?

Are you about to fit your new fork on your mountain bike? Here is our advice to help you carry out this operation without any mistakes.

Steps

Remove the wheel and then release the brake hose to remove the calliper.
Hold the fork in place with a strap.
Unscrew the stem cap bolt, then the stem, and remove everything.
Remove the fork by releasing the strap.
Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to clean and check the condition of the headset.
Remove the fork crown race and then refit it onto the new fork. Probikeshop tip: be careful not to damage the lower part of your fork during this operation.
Do a first "dry run" assembly of the new fork and cockpit to mark the cutting line of the steerer tube (The cylindrical element of the fork that connects to the frame and onto which the stem is fitted.).
Disassemble everything again and then cut the steerer tube 3 mm below the line; deburr the cut afterwards.
Probikeshop tip: after cutting the steerer tube, turn the fork upside down so that the steerer tube faces downward to clear the metal filings without getting them on the stanchions and seals.
Fit the fork star nut.
Probikeshop tip: be careful not to damage the lower part of your fork during this operation.
Clean and grease the headset before fitting the fork and the cockpit, then the brake calliper and the wheel.
Finish with the brake calliper centring and then the headset adjustment.

Your fork installation is complete. Remember to regularly lubricate the stanchions to maintain full sensitivity during operation and to preserve your equipment.
