How to cut and fit mountain bike brake hoses?
As pressure in the brake circuit can reach high levels, it is important to fit your hose correctly to avoid any problems. Here is how to do it on your mountain bike.

- Tools: Hose cutter | 8 mm open-end spanner | Insert and olive for connecting the hose | Torque wrench
Steps
Note: depending on the brand the procedure may differ. It is preferable to consult the manufacturer's manual for your mountain bike brakes.
- Cut the hose to the desired length using a hose cutter.
- Place the dust cover A4, then the compression nut A3 and finally the olive A2 onto the hose.
Probikeshop tip: it is important to follow this order, otherwise you risk being unable to fit the parts afterwards.
- Place the insert A1 into the end of the hose. Note that for some brands such as Sram/Avid the insert is screwed in, whereas for others such as Shimano it simply needs to be pushed in by force while holding the hose with a specific tool.
- Position the assembly in the lever, then while holding the hose against the lever, begin to hand-tighten the compression nut.
- Check that the assembly is properly in place, then tighten the nut to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
Probikeshop tip: generally, the tightening torque is fairly low (between 5 and 7 N.m depending on the model). Make sure to follow these instructions so as not to damage the system.
Your hose is now installed but not yet operational. Before heading out to ride, you will need to bleed the hydraulic circuit. This procedure varies depending on the brand. (See the associated tips below).
