How to fit a road bike bottom bracket?

Has your new bottom bracket just been delivered? Here is everything you need to carry out the relatively straightforward installation.

  • Time: 10 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Allen key set | Grease

Steps

REMINDER: Since Hollowtech II and GXP standards represent the majority of bottom brackets, we will cover the installation of these versions.

  1. Grease the bottom bracket axle to ease installation and protect it from corrosion
  2. Insert the axle into the bottom bracket shell until it reaches the stop. In the case of a GXP, you may need to add washers before inserting the axle — refer to the manual
  3. Fit the 2nd crank arm onto the bottom bracket axle
  4. For a Hollowtech II type, adjust the play in the bottom bracket using the nut fitted at the end of the axle, then tighten the two Allen bolts on the crank arm to the specified torque. For a GXP, tighten the bolt at the end of the axle to the specified torque.

Now that your bottom bracket is fitted, it is important to check the play and tightening after the first ride.
