This junction box is the very heart of any drivetrain SHIMANO Di2 Dura-Ace and Ultegra.  It is indeed through it that gear shift commands pass, and where settings are stored. It will find its place under the stem.
 
The true brain of the system, this spare part will allow you to enjoy your drivetrain without buying the entire system again: essential in the event of breakage or failure.
